Naturals Making News

Hey guys!
Here's something that's really cool.  I just happened to come across this article,  "Going Natural Requires Lots of Help" in the New York Times and just had to let you all know about it.  The article features three of the top natural hair gurus out right now: Alicia Nicole Walton of Curlynikki, Maeling Tapp of CurlyChica and Kim Love of Kimmaytube.

I love, love, love the idea of Natural Hair getting some much needed positive attention.  Here's a quote from the article by Ms. CurlyNikki herself, "More and more black women are wearing their hair natural," she said.  "I hope that soon, kinky hair will be the standard."
Do check it out!

Beets: Super Food of the Week

Hey guys!
Phil and I recently went food shopping and were excited to pick up some fruits and vegetables to try out our new Magic Bullet!  While perusing the vegetables I picked up a few beets at the suggestion of Phil's mom.  I had never tried beets before and I actually had no idea how to prepare them since I wanted to use them for more than juices.  While researching online I found out that Beets have several nutritional and health benefits.

Below is a list of what I think are the Top 5 Reasons to Add Beets to Your Diet:
Reason #1 ~ Nutrient Packed:  Beats have a high content of vitamins A, B and C.  They also contain potassium, manganese, fiber and folic acid.  It also provides natural digestible sugar through its carbohydrate content.
Reason #2 ~ Detoxing: Now here's an interesting fun fact . . . .the choline in beet juice not only detoxifies your liver, but your entire system of excessive alcohol abuse if consumption ceases.  That's pretty amazing!
Reason #3 ~ Constipation:  Bowel movements can be eased because of the cellulose content in beets.  What's even better, consuming beet juice on a regular basis helps relieve chronic constipation.
Reason #4 ~ Cancer Fighter:  This reason's a no-brainer.  Beet root contains Betaine, which is an anti-cancer agent.  Moreover, beet juice hinders the formation of cancer compounds, particularly stomach and colon cancer.
Reason #5 ~ Got Dandruff? . . .  By mixing beet juice with a little bit of vinegar, dandruff issues can be cleared up if used daily.  You'll have to massage the mixture onto your scalp, leave on for about an hour and rinse off.  However, be warned.  The mixture doesn't have the most pleasant smell.

Over the weekend I'll post a Beet Juice recipe, so stay tuned!

Curly Nikki Love!

Hey guys!
This will be a quick post. . . . .When I first started researching natural hair care and decided to go natural, one of the first websites I came across was CurlyNikki.com.  Discovering this site, and a host of others (for a list check out this post), has helped me out beyond words.  Through these sites I've slowly become comfortable with my own hair and how to properly care for it.  I recently submitted a photo for CurlyNikki's Show and Tell: Fierce Friday posts and was featured this week!  I'm so excited!

That's me at the top with a HUGE grin on my face, lol.

Definitely check out CurlyNikki.com for natural hair tips, tricks and all things in between.

Tunes To Keep You Moving: Camp Lo

If you're in the mood to take a trip down Hip Hop memory lane, take a listen to Camp Lo's Uptown Saturday Night.  Sonny Cheeba and Geechie Suede made up this Bronx duo that dropped their debut CD in 1996.  What made this CD so great was the fact that it sounded like no other hip hop out at the time and their vocal styles were both unique and distinct as far as I'm concerned.  Camp Lo helped keep hip hop diverse and evolving.  Their CD is mostly a tribute to the 70's with several references to blaxploitation films and TV shows.  Case in point, their video for "Black Nostaljack" aka Come On was a take on the hit TV show Good Times and also featured Jimmie Walker (JJ) and Bernadette Stanis (Thelma).  The whole CD is thumping from beginning to end and there really isn't anything else to say.  My favorite track: Sparkle

Co-Washing

Hey guys!
A few weeks ago, I started a 6-Month Hair Challenge with a focus on length retention.  Within that time, I've been doing a lot of research and reading articles about how to properly care for my Natural Hair.  A term I've noticed come up several times is the concept of Co-Washing.  Co-washing is short for conditioner washing and what it is, is exactly what it sounds like.  Your conditioner is used to wash your hair instead of a shampoo.  Although any hair type can use this method, it's mostly used by African Americans to aid in moisture retention for their hair.

From what I've read, any cheap conditioner will do the trick.  This is one of the reasons why I'm anxious to try it.  It just so happens that on a recent trip to Shop Rite, I bought about 5 bottles of Suave Naturals Tropical Coconut Conditioner (a GREAT moisturizing conditioner). It was on sale for 80 cents and I just couldn't pass that up.  Another reason I'd like to give co-washing a go is because I work out so often.  I'm all about keeping my hair fresh AND moisturized so co-washing sounds like a great addition to my hair care regimen as a mid-week wash.  I'll give it a shot tomorrow night and post how my hair responds the following day.  Stay tuned!

Staying Motivated: I Want That Body

Here's another Fitness Chic worth mentioning as an inspiration . . . the lovely Tanji Johnson.  Tanji has been in the fitness game for over 10 years.  As a result of her military background, Tanji became involved in Fitness as a way to challenge herself and promote her look since she always considered her physique to be a bit muscular.  Tanji began competing in 1998 and earned her Pro card at the 2001 NPC National Fitness Championships.  Tanji's gymnastics background makes her Fitness routines the highlight of any show she competes in.

Tanji currently ranks 2nd in the world in IFBB Pro Fitness and has won 6 IFBB Fitness titles.  Tanji's a contributing writer in several fitness magazines (ex. MaxMuscle, NPC News & Faith and Fitness), has been a featured model in Oxygen and Muscle & Fitness Hers and co-promotes The Vancouver Natural Bodybuilding and Tanji Johnson Fitness/Figure Classic.  As if all of this wasn't enough, Tanji also played the character of Stealth on American Gladiators

I consider the fitness industry like the entertainment industry in that these athletes are considered celebrities to most people that follow this sport.  With that said, one of the things I admire most about Tanji is her spirituality.  In this day and age where most people keep their spirituality to themselves, Tanji openly discusses the role God plays in her life.  I think that's refreshing. Another reason I admire Tanji is because of her Save Fitness initiative.  Save Fitness, founded in 2008, is a program she developed to promote the sport of Fitness by encouraging upcoming Fitness, Figure & Bikini amateurs.  It's programs like these that help keep this great sport alive.

Today's Workout: Monday, June 6th, 2011

Okay, so technically it's already Tuesday but I wanted to mention my activities for the day.  As I mentioned previously, Phil (my boyfriend) and I have become workout buddies and are on a joint quest to get back into shape.  Today we did 45 minutes of racket ball at the park and finished off with another 40 minutes of lower body weight lifting.  We both feel pretty good and actually look forward to working out whenever we can.

Do any of you have workout buddies out there?  If not, how do you guys stay motivated?
Til next time everyone!
